11/30/22

Today, our guest speaker was Dr. Jeff Schuler, Superintendent of Schools.

Starting with a financial and facilities capital projects overview (highlights: 13 years of balanced budgets, expectation that the district will be debt-free in Levy Year 2025, $38 million of infrastructure investment since 2016), much of the presentation focused on preparing the students for their futures.

Portrait of a Graduate
The District believes the qualities and skills the students should have when they graduate from high school are:
1. Communicator: be someone with the ability to articulate and express thoughts clearly, self advocate for their needs, and to listen and understand diverse perspectives.
2. Problem Solver: be someone with the ability to design and create solutions by innovating, thinking critically and independently, and is ethical in their decision-making.
3. Resilient Learner: be someone who responds to challenges, engages in effortful learning, and demonstrates adaptability amidst change, and
4. Collaborator: be someone who valuably contributes when working with others, understands and values the strengths of others.

Career Pathways: This program assists students in selecting high school courses that are aligned to their personal areas of interest and career goals. After completing a career interest survey, students receive information, obtain skills, and experience school and work-related activities to help them maximize the potential of their high school years.  In addition to recommended courses, students are provided with information about related Technical Center of DuPage courses, extracurricular activities, industry-recognized credentials, early college coursework, work experiences, and sample career and college majors that fall within each area.

The District is seeking opportunities with local businesses:
* Volunteer as a classroom guest speaker
* Participate in a potential Career Day
* Provide job shadowing opportunities
* Hire students
* Take on a student as a long-term intern or apprentice
